A review for the system and not the stupid scalpers

I wish people would stop giving the system a bad review just because of scalpers. The New 3DS is the best iteration of the best current gen system out there. This packs more processing power, has better 3D, works with Amiibos, and will play exclusives like Xenoblade Chronicles. What’s not to love?

Obviously there are/were some things going on that really irked people. I’ll admit, I wasn’t awaiting this release and haven’t done the scan through the reviews, but I take it was around a massive jackup between supply and demand. My wife purchased this device for 200 USD at a local store with a red circle as its logo. Even then she had to keep her eyes out for two weeks to finally find a store that had one in stock. She completely lucked out, as she tells me, finding one yesterday…which was the recipient’s birthday. Not sure why it is 40 USD more at Amazon, though.

The reviews for this thing are skewed very negatively because of how poorly handled the release of the limited “Majora’s Mask” edition was. The device itself is fantastic. With more processing power there is a very noticeable improvement in load times for all of my 3DS games. The head tracking for “super stable 3D” works far better than I expected it to and, while it’s certainly not perfect, it definitely presents a much more stable 3D image than that of the original 3DS. I have actually found myself using the 3D functionality much more since upgrading. The C-Stick nub may seem unusable at first as it does not at all feel like it is moving when you push it but after using it in game I’ve found it to be very responsive and I feel that were I to use the old 3DS again I would be missing it. My biggest complaint is simply with the confusing name choice. When you’re releasing a new version of a console/handheld it will generally help if you differentiate the names of the two devices a bit more than adding the word “new” in front of the old name.

I pre-ordered mine from Gamestop and received it just barely after the public launch. I’ve been using it regularly ever since, and after a few months in use, I think I’m ready to write a proper review now.

Very minor flaws. Great Console

I was a happy owner of the regular 3DS XL and now I am glad to say that this new 3DS sees much improvement over the original. For starters, the 3D is wonderful to use and extremely reliable, even in the dark. I usually played with 3D off in the previous 3DS because of the narrow effective area. The colors on this screen are brighter and overall, it loads snappily even though I think this snappiness should have been standard.

Fantastic system, this is the 3DS perfected

Nintendo is one for constant hardware iterations, and they finally got the 3DS right with the New XL. Despite the confusing name, it actually does feel all new. The entire system is streamlined and it feels like Nintendo finally wrapped their minds around how they want the 3DS to be, and this is the final (hopefully) result. All of the features implemented into the 3DS up until now are present on the 3DS from hardware changes to software.

The Best Iteration to date

First off, I did not purchase this system through amazon or a third party seller so I can not speak on behalf of the packaging or shipping from that stand point. I purchased my system from a local store but I would like to review the system from a buyer’s perspective because I use amazon for reviews frequently before buying things on/off line depending on price advantages. So to start off I will begin with the Cons

An excellent choice for gaming on the go.

I continue to be amazed by the quality that Nintendo packed into this machine. The 3D is impressive when the device is held properly, and if one desires to hold it further away then the screen can be put in 2D mode with a simple control. The touch screen is tight and responsive, the battery lasts a good long time, and the game selection is the best a handheld has ever known. The new addition of the camera control knob is nice, but it is not quite as responsive and precise as I would like. It is hard to pack precision in a tiny little knob, but it does the job when I need it to for the most part. For those who like quality gaming on the go, I definitely recommend this console. My only gripe is that a charger is not provided with what you buy. Squeezing an extra 10-15$ for something that is required to operate the system just feels greedy. That said, the whole package is worth that extra bit of cash and then some depending on how fond you are of the game library.

[Note to Amazon: Seperate the product pages for the Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL, and the Black/Red ones, as the 1 star reviews are carried over from the MM one to the regular ones.]

Review of the product, not the scalpers. Great job Nintendo!
